Itineraries

1 day in Marrakech

A long, well-ordered day on foot: the palaces in the morning, the madrasa and the souks after lunch, sunset over Jemaa el-Fna and dinner at the food stalls.

Updated 6 min read

One day is short for Marrakech, but enough to see the essentials if you plan the order. The trick is geography: the palaces are in the south of the Medina, the madrasa and the souks in the north, and Jemaa el-Fna in between. This plan walks you south in the morning, north after lunch and back to the square for the evening, about 8 km in all.

Every stop below has its opening hours and ticket price, and the walking time to the next one. Wear comfortable shoes, carry small change for the tickets, and leave a little room for getting lost: it is part of the day.

Your day

Palaces, souks and the square at night

Nine stops, about 8 km on foot. Times are a guide: the only fixed points are the palaces at opening time and the sunset.

  1. 8:45 Visit

    Koutoubia Mosque

    Koutoubia · Free · 20 min

Start outside the city’s great landmark while the streets are quiet. You can’t enter the mosque unless you are Muslim, but the minaret and the rose gardens beside it are at their best in the morning light.

  2. 20 min walk
  3. 9:15 Visit

    Bahia Palace

    Riad Zitoun / Mellah · 100 MAD (≈ €9) · 1 h 15

Be at the gate soon after it opens at 9:00, before the tour groups. Walk through the courtyards slowly and look up: the painted cedar ceilings are the reason to come.

  4. 15 min walk
  5. 10:45 Visit

    Saadian Tombs

    Kasbah · 100 MAD (≈ €9) · 40 min

The royal necropolis of the Saadian sultans, hidden behind the Kasbah mosque. The queue moves quickly; the Chamber of the Twelve Columns is one of the finest rooms in Morocco.

  6. 20 min walk
  7. 12:30 Eat

    Café des Épices

    Rahba Kedima · € · under 100 MAD · 1 h

Walk back north through the Medina to the spice square and have lunch on the terrace above it: salads, a tagine and mint tea while you watch the square.

  8. 5 min walk
  9. 14:00 Visit

    Ben Youssef Madrasa

    Ben Youssef · 50 MAD (≈ €5) · 45 min

The 16th-century Koranic school, with its carved stucco, cedar and zellige around a marble courtyard. Climb to the students’ cells upstairs for the view down into it.

  10. 5 min walk
  11. 15:15 Visit

    Le Jardin Secret

    Mouassine · 100 MAD (≈ €9) · 45 min

A restored riad garden in the heart of the souks: shade, fountains and a calm half hour. Pay the small extra for the tower if you want a view over the rooftops.

  12. 5 min walk
  13. 16:15 Shopping

    Souk Semmarine

    Souks · Free · 1 h 30

Wander south through the main souk street towards the square, browsing lanterns, leather and textiles. Look first, compare, and bargain with a smile if something catches your eye.

  14. 5 min walk
  15. 18:00 Coffee & drinks

Le Grand Balcon du Café Glacier

    Jemaa el-Fna · € · under 100 MAD · 45 min

Take a table on the terrace above Jemaa el-Fna for sunset, when the smoke of the food stalls rises and the call to prayer echoes across the square. A drink is the price of the view.

  16. 5 min walk
  17. 19:00 Evening

    Jemaa el-Fna

    Medina centre · Free · 1–2 h

Go down into the square: storytellers, Gnaoua musicians and dozens of numbered food stalls. Choose a busy one, sit at the bench and order a mix of grilled meat, harira and snails if you dare.

Swap a stop

The plan above is the classic. Here is how to adapt it to your taste.

  1. Gardens

    Majorelle instead of the tombs

Take a taxi to the Majorelle Garden at 8:00, when it opens, then the Bahia at 10:00. Book the garden online: tickets are timed and sell out.

    Attractions
  2. Relax

    A hammam before dinner

Swap the souk walk for a hammam at 16:00: an hour of steam and black-soap scrub, then sunset on the terrace.

    Hammams & spas
  3. Guide

    With a guide

A private guide for the morning takes the stress out of the Medina, explains what you see and saves time in the lanes.

  4. Food

    A street food tour

Replace the evening at the stalls with a guided street food tour: ten tastings and the stories behind them.

Good to know

Small things that make a single day go smoothly.

  1. Shoes

    Comfortable shoes

You will walk about 8 km on uneven lanes and stone floors. Bring water and a hat from April to October.

  2. Cash

    Small change

Carry 50 and 100 MAD notes for tickets, tips and the food stalls. ATMs are on the main squares.

  3. Friday

    Friday prayers

Around midday on Fridays, some shops in the souks close for an hour or two. Plan lunch then.

  4. Guides

    Unofficial guides

Young men may offer to show you the way, or tell you a road is closed. Say a polite “no, thank you” and use your map.

  5. Dress

    What to wear

Light clothes that cover shoulders and knees are comfortable and respectful in the Medina.

  6. Night

    Safety at night

Jemaa el-Fna is busy and safe in the evening. Watch your bag in the crowd and agree prices with performers before photos.

Book ahead

Majorelle tickets are timed and sell out; a private guide makes a single day much easier. Both with free cancellation.

One day in Marrakech: your questions

Is one day in Marrakech enough?

It is enough to see the palaces, the madrasa, the souks and Jemaa el-Fna at night if you start early. Two or three days let you add the gardens, a hammam and a day trip without rushing.

What should I not miss with one day?

The Bahia Palace, the Ben Youssef Madrasa, a walk through the souks and the evening on Jemaa el-Fna, ideally with sunset from a terrace above the square.

Can I visit Marrakech in one day without a guide?

Yes. All the stops on this page are easy to find with an offline map. A guide helps if you would rather not navigate the souks yourself.

How much do tickets cost for one day?

About 350 MAD per adult for the Bahia, the Saadian Tombs, Ben Youssef and Le Jardin Secret. Majorelle is 170 MAD more.

Is it worth seeing Majorelle with only one day?

If gardens are your thing, yes: go at 8:00 when it opens and skip the Saadian Tombs. It is in Gueliz, a 10-minute taxi ride from the Medina.

What can I do on a stopover in Marrakech?

From the airport, the Medina is 20 minutes by taxi. With six hours, see the Koutoubia, the Bahia and Jemaa el-Fna; with a full day, follow this plan.

More time in Marrakech?

Hours and prices checked in October 2026. Opening hours are shorter during Ramadan, and some museums close one day a week: check before you go.
