Where to stay in the Medina

The old walled city is Marrakech at its most vivid: souks, mosques and Jemaa el-Fna, with hidden riads behind every other door. Here’s whether it suits you, and where to stay in it.

Staying in the Medina means waking to the call to prayer, stepping out of a quiet courtyard into the souks, and walking home from dinner on Jemaa el-Fna. No other part of Marrakech gives you the city so directly. It is also busy, noisy in places and car-free, and finding your way through its lanes takes a day or two.

Most visitors still choose it, and for a first trip we would too. We’ve picked ten places across every budget, from a €44 riad 70 metres from the square to a private palace riad. Most are within a 15-minute walk of Jemaa el-Fna.

All ten are inside the walls, but the Medina is bigger than it looks. El Fenn, Joya and Jnane Mogador are five minutes from Jemaa el-Fna, close to the action and the noise. Kaiss, Christina, Dar Najat and Oiseau du Paradis are around ten minutes away, in calmer lanes. Kniza, Kheirredine and Royal Mansour sit further out, near the gates, where the Medina is quieter and taxis are closer.

Why Stay in the Medina?

The Medina isn’t the most convenient neighborhood in Marrakech. The streets are narrow, cars can’t reach most riads, and finding your way takes a day or two. But none of that matters once you’re inside it — because nothing else in Marrakech comes close to this.

    Jemaa el-Fna, the Koutoubia Mosque, Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the main souks — most of what you came to see is within a fifteen-minute walk of any riad in the Medina.

FAQ: Staying in the Medina, Marrakech

Is it safe to stay in the Medina?

Yes. Millions of people stay in the Medina every year without issue. Most riads have secure entrances — you typically ring a bell, a staff member opens the door, and the riad itself is completely private. The usual common sense applies in the streets: watch your belongings in crowded souks and avoid poorly lit alleys late at night. The Medina is considerably less intimidating than it looks on the first day.

What types of accommodation are available in the Medina?

Mostly riads — traditional Moroccan houses organized around interior courtyards, converted into guesthouses ranging from budget to five-star. A smaller number of boutique hotels also operate within the Medina walls. What you won’t find are large chain hotels or resort-style properties — the streets are too narrow and the buildings too old. That’s rather the point.

Are Medina stays suitable for families?

It depends on the family. The Medina’s narrow alleyways and multi-level riad layouts can be challenging with very young children or strollers. That said, many riads have larger suites or connecting rooms and are genuinely welcoming to families. If you have young children and need a pool and open space, a resort in the Palmeraie is more practical. If your children are old enough to walk and enjoy exploring, the Medina is extraordinary.
