Where to Stay in the Medina, Marrakech

Yes. Millions of people stay in the Medina every year without issue. Most riads have secure entrances — you typically ring a bell, a staff member opens the door, and the riad itself is completely private. The usual common sense applies in the streets: watch your belongings in crowded souks and avoid poorly lit alleys late at night. The Medina is considerably less intimidating than it looks on the first day.

Mostly riads — traditional Moroccan houses organized around interior courtyards, converted into guesthouses ranging from budget to five-star. A smaller number of boutique hotels also operate within the Medina walls. What you won’t find are large chain hotels or resort-style properties — the streets are too narrow and the buildings too old. That’s rather the point.

It depends on the family. The Medina’s narrow alleyways and multi-level riad layouts can be challenging with very young children or strollers. That said, many riads have larger suites or connecting rooms and are genuinely welcoming to families. If you have young children and need a pool and open space, a resort in the Palmeraie is more practical. If your children are old enough to walk and enjoy exploring, the Medina is extraordinary.
