Ouzoud Waterfalls day trip from Marrakech

A river drops 110 metres in a series of cascades into a red gorge full of olive trees, rainbows and Barbary monkeys. Morocco’s most spectacular waterfalls, three hours from Marrakech.

Updated 5 min read

The Ouzoud Waterfalls are in the Middle Atlas foothills, about 150 km north-east of Marrakech. They are a long day out, ten hours with the drive, but the most impressive natural sight within reach of the city, and one of the most booked day trips: group tours start at about €13.

You walk down past viewpoints to the foot of the falls, take a small boat into the spray if you like, have lunch on a terrace facing the water, and climb back up through the olive groves, where wild macaques live. This page explains the options, which change the price a lot, and how to make the most of the day.

The day

Down to the falls, up through the olives

A long but easy day: most of it on the road, the best of it in the gorge.

Pickup is early, around 7:15 to 8:00. The road crosses the plain of the Haouz and climbs into the hills around Azilal, with a coffee stop on the way. You arrive at the village of Tanaghmeilt, above the falls, late in the morning.

Your guide leads you down a path of steps and viewpoints, each one showing more of the cascades, to the pools at the bottom. This is where the boats leave, and where cafés and terraces line the river. After lunch, the walk back up follows the other side of the gorge through olive groves, where families of Barbary macaques live in the trees.

The paths are steep in places but well used; count about two hours of walking in total, at an easy pace. You leave in mid-afternoon and are back in Marrakech around 18:00 to 19:00.

Good to know before you go

Practical points for a long day out.

  1. Seasons

    When to go

March to June, when snowmelt and spring rain fill the falls. In late summer the flow is lower but still beautiful, and the pools are refreshing. Winter is quiet and cool.

  2. Shoes

    What to wear

Trainers with grip: the steps are wet near the falls. A light rain jacket or a change of top if you take the boat.

  3. Swim

    Swimming

In summer, people swim in the pools downstream of the falls. Swim only where locals do, never under the falls themselves.

  4. Cash

    Bring dirhams

For the boat, lunch, drinks and tips if they are not included. Card payment is rare at the falls.

  5. Car

    Motion sickness

The last part of the road winds through the hills. If you are prone to car sickness, sit at the front and take something before you leave.

  6. Night

    Stay over

A night in a guesthouse above the falls lets you see them early, before the tour groups arrive around 11:00.
