Getting around Marrakech

From the airport to your riad door, then around the city and beyond: the real prices, the easy options, and the last two hundred metres that no car can drive.

Updated 7 min read

Marrakech-Menara airport is only six kilometres from the Medina, fifteen to twenty-five minutes by car. The trip is easy, but the first evening trips up many visitors: taxis cannot enter most of the Medina, riads often have no street number, and the lanes look alike in the dark.

This page covers the four ways to get from the airport into town, what they cost in 2026, and how to make sure someone walks you to the door. Then the petit taxis, the apps, and how to travel on to Essaouira, Casablanca or the Atlas.

Four ways into town

The cheapest is the bus, the simplest is a driver waiting with your name. For a first visit to a Medina riad, the second is worth the difference.

Ride-hailing apps such as inDrive and Heetch also work, for about 50–120 MAD, but they operate in a legal grey zone at the airport, and you may have to walk to a pickup point outside the terminal. For a first arrival, we would not rely on them.

In the city

On foot, and by petit taxi

Inside the Medina, you walk. Between the Medina, Gueliz, Majorelle and the Palmeraie, the beige petit taxis are cheap and everywhere.

Finding your way in the Medina

The lanes are a maze, at first. These habits help.

  1. Pin

    Save your riad’s pin

Ask your riad for its location pin and photo of the door before you arrive. Street addresses rarely help a driver.

  2. Gates

    Learn two landmarks

The nearest gate (bab) and square to your riad are what drivers and passers-by understand. Name those, not the riad.

  3. Carts

    Porters with carts

At gates and squares, men with wooden carts offer to carry bags. Fine if you need it: agree about 20–30 MAD before they start.

  4. “Closed”

    This road is closed

If a stranger tells you the lane ahead is closed and offers to lead you, it almost never is. Keep walking and check your map.

  5. Motos

    Watch for scooters

Scooters and donkey carts use the same narrow lanes. Keep to the side, and listen for “balak”, which means “watch out”.

  6. Night

    After dark

Main lanes stay busy until late. For quiet lanes at night, ask your riad to meet you at the nearest square.
