The Agafay desert from Marrakech

Forty minutes from the Medina, the city falls away into ochre hills with the snowy Atlas behind them. The easiest taste of the desert, for an evening or a night.

Updated 6 min read

Agafay is not the Sahara: it is a stony desert, a rolling plateau of rock, dust and sparse scrub south-west of Marrakech. What it lacks in dunes it makes up for in space, silence and sunsets, with the High Atlas lined up on the horizon.

Dozens of camps are scattered across it, from simple tents to luxury lodges with pools. Most visitors come for an afternoon and evening: a quad or camel ride, the sunset, then dinner and music in a camp. You can also stay the night, which is when Agafay is at its best.

Ways to go

An evening, a day or a night

Three ways to do Agafay, all with transfer from your hotel.

Sunset, ride and dinner. The most popular outing leaves Marrakech in the early afternoon. You ride a quad, a camel or both for about an hour across the hills, watch the sun go down over the Atlas, then sit down to dinner in a camp: salads, tagine and fruit, with Gnaoua music and often a fire show. You are back at your hotel around 10 or 11 pm. It costs from about €18 with transfer, a remarkable price for six or seven hours.

A night in a camp. Staying over turns a fun evening into something memorable: the noise of dinner fades, the sky fills with stars, and you wake up to the light on the hills. Packages with a tent, dinner, breakfast and transfer start at about €58 per person, some with a pool and a quad or camel ride. Luxury camps with heated tents and private bathrooms cost much more and are booked directly.

A day by the pool. Several camps sell a day pass with lunch and a pool facing the desert, a calm alternative in spring and early autumn. Combine it with the dam lake of Lalla Takerkoust, 20 minutes away, where you can have lunch on the shore.

Agafay or Sahara

Stone desert or sand dunes

If you have the time, the Sahara is unforgettable. If you don’t, Agafay gives you the desert feeling in an afternoon.

Agafay Sahara (Merzouga)
Distance 40–45 minutes 9–10 hours by road
Landscape Rocky hills, Atlas views High golden dunes
Time needed An evening or one night Three days, two of them on the road
From About €18 with dinner About €120 for a 3-day group tour
Best for Short stays, families, a first taste A longer trip with time to spare

Many travellers do both on a longer trip: Agafay on an evening in Marrakech, then the Sahara on the way to Fes. If you have four days or fewer, Agafay is the sensible choice.

Good to know before you go

Weather, clothes and the small things that make the evening better.

  1. Seasons

    When to go

October–November and March–May are ideal. Summer afternoons pass 40 °C, so go for sunset only. Winter days are mild, but nights drop close to freezing.

  2. Layers

    What to bring

A warm layer for after sunset, even in spring, closed shoes, sunglasses and a scarf against the dust. For a night: a torch and something warm to sleep in.

  3. Food

    Dinner and diets

Dinners are Moroccan set menus. Vegetarian meals are easy to get if you ask when booking; alcohol is served only in some camps.

  4. Kids

    With children

Agafay is great with children: camels, open space and fire shows. On quads they ride as passengers. Pack pyjamas and blankets for the drive back.

  5. Transport

    Getting there

There is no public transport. Tours include the transfer; otherwise take a taxi or private driver for the whole evening, agreed in advance.

  6. Stars

    Stargazing

Away from the city lights, the sky is full of stars on moonless nights. Check the moon calendar if it matters to you.

The Agafay desert: your questions

How far is the Agafay desert from Marrakech?

About 40 km south-west, a 40 to 45 minute drive from the Medina.

Are there sand dunes in Agafay?

No. Agafay is a stony desert of rolling hills. For sand dunes, you need the Sahara at Merzouga or Zagora, a multi-day trip from Marrakech.

How much does an Agafay tour cost?

From about €18 per person for a sunset quad or camel ride with dinner and transfer, and from about €58 for a night in a camp with dinner and breakfast.

Is Agafay worth it?

Yes, if you know what to expect: wide views, a beautiful sunset and a fun evening, not the Sahara. It is the best desert experience if you only have a few days.

Can I visit Agafay without a tour?

Yes, by taxi or private driver to a camp where you have booked lunch, a day pass or a night. There is no public transport.

Is it cold at night in Agafay?

From November to March, yes: nights can drop close to freezing. Bring warm layers; good camps provide blankets or heated tents.
