Day trips

Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate from Marrakech

Over the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass to a fortified village of red earth climbing a hill above a river: the most famous kasbah in Morocco, and the backdrop of countless films.

Updated 6 min read

Aït Ben Haddou is a ksar, a fortified village of earthen houses and towers, on the old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, and you have probably seen it already, in Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator or Game of Thrones.

It is about 190 km from Marrakech, over the highest road pass in Morocco. That makes it the longest day trip on this site, twelve hours or more, for about €22 with a group. This page explains whether it is worth it as a day trip, what you see, and the alternative: stopping there on the way to the Sahara.

The day

Over the pass, into the ksar

A long day, but the road is part of the trip.

Pickup is between 7:00 and 8:00. The road crosses the plain, then climbs the High Atlas in long bends through walnut valleys and Berber villages, with a coffee stop on the way. At the Tizi n’Tichka pass, 2,260 metres up, the landscape changes: on the far side, the mountains turn bare and red, the light hardens, and you are in the pre-Sahara.

You reach Aït Ben Haddou around midday. A local guide walks you across the river and up through the lanes of the ksar, past houses where a few families still live and artists sell paintings made with saffron and tea, to the ruined granary at the top. The view over the valley and the desert plain is the reason to come. Lunch follows in a restaurant facing the ksar.

In the afternoon, tours continue to Ouarzazate, 30 minutes away, the town of the film studios. You can visit a studio (tickets are extra, about €13) or the Taourirt Kasbah, a former palace of the Glaoui family, before the drive back. You are in Marrakech around 20:00.

Worth it?

A day trip, or a stop on the way

Seven or eight hours in a minibus for two hours at the ksar. Here is how to decide.

Day trip On a Sahara tour With a night there
Time on the road 7–8 hours in one day Part of day 1 of 3 3½–4 hours each way
Time at the ksar About 2 hours, at midday About 1–2 hours Sunset and sunrise, without crowds
Price From about €22 Included, from about €120 for 3 days A guesthouse plus transport
Best for Short stays with no Sahara plan Anyone going to the dunes Photographers, slow travellers

If you are planning a Sahara trip, skip the day trip: all three-day tours to Merzouga stop at Aït Ben Haddou on the first day. If you are not, and you love history, cinema or mountain roads, the day trip is worth its long hours. A night at Aït Ben Haddou is better still: the ksar is magical at dawn, before the coaches arrive.

Good to know before you go

Mountains, then desert: dress for both.

  1. Layers

    Two climates

The pass can be close to freezing in winter, with snow; Ouarzazate is hot and dry. Wear layers and comfortable shoes.

  2. Seasons

    When to go

October to May. In summer the ksar is very hot at midday. In winter, snow sometimes closes the Tichka pass for a day: tours are moved, not cancelled without notice.

  3. Entry

    Is it free?

Walking through the ksar is free. Some houses ask a small fee to visit their rooms or terrace; your guide expects a tip.

  4. Films

    The studios

Atlas and CLA studios near Ouarzazate show sets from famous films. Fun for film lovers; others may prefer the Taourirt Kasbah.

  5. Kids

    With children

Twelve hours with eight in a minibus is hard for young children. With kids, choose the Ourika Valley or Imlil instead.

  6. Night

    Sleep there

Guesthouses facing the ksar let you see it at sunset and sunrise, the best light, and break the long drive.
