Why go
Five minutes north of Jemaa el-Fna, the square is calmer and more local than the main souk streets. Stalls sell spices, dried roses, ghassoul clay and argan oil, alongside straw hats and baskets.
At its north side, the criée berbère is where carpets were once auctioned; late afternoon is the liveliest time.
Tips
- Buy spices from the stalls that let you smell and taste first.
- Watch the square from the rooftop of Café des Épices.
- Photo tip: From the Café des Épices terrace, looking down on the baskets and spice pyramids.
