Marrakech has some of the finest hotels in the world, and they come in two kinds. In the city, La Mamounia, Les Jardins de La Koutoubia and the Hivernage hotels put you within walking distance of the Medina. Outside it, the great resorts — the Oberoi, Mandarin Oriental, Amanjena — trade the souks for gardens, private pools and silence, 10 to 25 minutes away by car.

The resorts sit 10–25 minutes out: the Oberoi, Amanjena and Mandarin Oriental to the east and south-east, Selman and the Fairmont Royal Palm on the Amizmiz road to the south, Palais Namaskar in the Palmeraie.

Why a luxury hotel

Space, gardens, service

A riad gives you the Medina at your door. A great hotel gives you what the Medina can’t: room to breathe, big pools, a real spa and staff for every need.

Even the grandest riad is a house: a few rooms around a courtyard, a plunge pool, a hammam in the basement. A luxury hotel works on another scale. The resorts outside the city have hectares of gardens, pools you can actually swim in, and villas with a pool of their own. The spas are among the best in Morocco, and there are several restaurants, so you never have to plan dinner.

Service is the other difference. Staff are trained to international standards, there is a concierge to book a table or a guide, and a car is waiting at the door, which matters in a city where taxis can’t enter the Medina lanes. For families, kids’ clubs, bigger rooms and safe pools make the trip easier for everyone.

The trade-off is distance. Apart from La Mamounia and Les Jardins de La Koutoubia, you won’t step out into the souks. You’ll need a car or a shuttle each time, and evenings in the old city take a little planning. Many travellers split their stay: a few nights in a riad, then a few in a resort.

How to choose

Six things to settle before you book. At this level every hotel is excellent; what differs is where it puts you and what is included.

  1. City or resort

    Choose your setting first

    In the city (La Mamounia, Koutoubia, Hivernage) you walk to dinner and the souks. In a resort you trade that for gardens, space and silence.

  2. 10–25 min

    Count the drive

    The resorts are 10 to 25 minutes from Jemaa el-Fna by car. Ask whether the hotel runs a shuttle to the Medina, and what a taxi back at night costs.

  3. €20–45

    Check breakfast

    At several of our picks, breakfast is not in the basic rate and costs about €20–45 per person. Compare rates with breakfast included.

  4. Villa

    Decide on a private pool

    Villas with their own pool (Oberoi, Mandarin Oriental, Amanjena, Namaskar) cost more but give you total privacy. They’re worth it in the warm months.

  5. Jan

    Pick your dates

    Rates are usually lowest in January and high summer, and highest in spring, in autumn and over the holidays. Book two to three months ahead for April or October.

  6. 12–18

    Read the child policy

    Each hotel sets the age at which a child pays as an adult: from 12 at Namaskar and 13 at the Oberoi to 18 at the Four Seasons. Check before booking a family room.

How much does a luxury hotel cost in Marrakech?

Among our picks, rooms start at about €245 a night at Les Jardins de La Koutoubia and go past €1,000 at Amanjena and Mandarin Oriental. Most of the big resorts start between €350 and €900. Rates rise in spring, in autumn and over the holidays.

What is the best luxury hotel in Marrakech?

It depends on what you want. The Oberoi has the highest guest scores. Mandarin Oriental and Amanjena are the best for privacy, with villas that have their own pool. La Mamounia is the legend, inside the walls. For families, look at the Four Seasons or the Fairmont Royal Palm.

Luxury hotel or luxury riad?

A luxury riad puts you inside the Medina, in an intimate house of a few rooms. A luxury hotel gives you space: gardens, big pools, a full spa and several restaurants. Many travellers do both: a few nights in a riad, then a few in a resort.

Which luxury hotels are within walking distance of Jemaa el-Fna?

Les Jardins de La Koutoubia is two minutes away and La Mamounia about fifteen. Nobu, in Hivernage, is about twenty minutes on foot. The other resorts are 10 to 25 minutes away by car.

Are luxury hotels in Marrakech good for families?

Yes, most of them. The Four Seasons, Selman and the Fairmont Royal Palm have kids’ clubs, and the Fairmont has five pools. Check each hotel’s child policy: the age at which children pay as adults varies from 12 to 18.

Is breakfast included?
