Where to stay

Romantic stays in Marrakech

Rooftop pools under the stars, villas with a garden of their own, adults-only riads where the only sound is the fountain: ten places made for two.

Updated 5 min read

Few cities do romance like Marrakech. Behind a plain door in the Medina, a courtyard of orange trees and candlelight; on the roof, the call to prayer at sunset and the Atlas turning pink. Outside the walls, villas with their own pool and garden, where breakfast arrives when you want it.

We chose these ten for couples: small riads with few rooms, three of them adults only, and hotels where privacy is the point. They range from a €120 riad with a heated rooftop pool to a private palace riad of your own, for a honeymoon, an anniversary or simply a few quiet days together.

Why Marrakech for two

A city that slows you down

The magic of Marrakech is in its contrasts: the noise of the souks, then the silence of a courtyard behind a closed door. For couples, that door is everything.

A riad is built for intimacy. Its rooms face inward onto a courtyard, the street disappears behind thick walls, and in the smallest houses you may share the place with only a handful of other guests. Breakfast under the orange trees, a hammam for two in the afternoon, dinner by candlelight on the roof: the day takes its rhythm from the house.

The great hotels offer another kind of romance: privacy on a larger scale. A villa with its own pool and garden, a spa where treatments are made for couples, and service that appears when you need it and leaves you alone when you don’t. It suits honeymoons and milestone trips, when the stay itself is the destination.

What matters most is fewer people, not more luxury. Look for a small number of rooms, a quiet lane or garden, and a terrace to watch the sunset. Several of our picks are adults only, which guarantees calm.

How to choose

Six details that turn a nice stay into a memorable one. Ask about them before you book.

  1. ≤ 12

    Choose a small house

Under a dozen rooms means a quiet courtyard and staff who know your names. Kniza and Kheirredine have 11, Hikaya 8, and Maïpa just 5.

  2. 18+

    Consider adults only

Kheirredine, Kniza and Maïpa don’t take children, so evenings by the pool and on the roof stay calm.

  3. Upper floor

    Ask for the right room

Sound carries around a riad courtyard. A room on the top floor or opening onto the terrace is usually the quietest, and often has the best light.

  4. Heated

    Check the pool in winter

From November to March, an unheated plunge pool is too cold to enjoy. Dar Najat and Hikaya heat theirs; the big hotels have heated pools.

  5. For two

    Book the hammam ahead

A couples’ hammam and massage is one of the best moments of a stay. Book it when you reserve the room, especially for weekends.

  6. Occasion

    Say what you’re celebrating

Mention a honeymoon or anniversary when booking. Many riads add a small touch or arrange a private dinner on the roof, often at extra cost.

Romantic Marrakech: your questions

What is the most romantic place to stay in Marrakech?

It depends on the trip you have in mind. For an intimate Medina riad, Kheirredine, Kniza and Maïpa are adults only and have very few rooms. For complete privacy, a villa with its own pool at Mandarin Oriental, or a private riad at Royal Mansour. On a smaller budget, Dar Najat has a heated pool on the roof.

Riad or hotel for a honeymoon?

Many couples do both: a few nights in a riad to live the Medina, then a few in a resort to rest. A riad is more intimate and atmospheric. A hotel gives more space, a bigger spa and a private pool.

Which riads in Marrakech are adults only?

Among our picks, Riad Kheirredine, Riad Kniza and Maïpa Boutique Riad don’t accept children. Policies can change, so check when booking.

Do unmarried couples need a marriage certificate?

Foreign couples are not asked for one at hotels and riads in practice. Moroccan law is applied differently to Moroccan couples, so if one of you is Moroccan, check with the hotel before booking.

When is the most romantic time to visit Marrakech?

April, May and October bring warm days, mild evenings for dinner on the roof, and clear sunsets over the Atlas. Winter is quieter and cheaper, but nights are cold, so choose a heated pool and a room with a fireplace or good heating.

Can the riad arrange something special for an anniversary?

Often, yes. Mention the occasion when you book: many riads can arrange flowers, a cake or a private dinner on the roof, usually at extra cost. A couples’ hammam or massage is best booked in advance.
