Why go

Built under Ahmed al-Mansour in the late 16th century, the tombs were walled off by the next dynasty and only rediscovered in 1917 from the air. Nothing was taken, which is why the craftsmanship is so intact.

The Chamber of the Twelve Columns is the highlight: Italian marble columns, a carved cedar dome and zellige floors around the sultan’s tomb. The site is small and the queue for that room is the only wait.

Tips

  • Come at opening: the queue to look into the main chamber builds fast.
  • It is a short visit; pair it with El Badi Palace, five minutes away.
