Budget riads in Marrakech

The same doors, courtyards and rooftops as the grand riads, for a fraction of the price, if you know which ones to choose.

Updated 5 min read

A budget riad in Marrakech is not a compromise; it is a different set of priorities. Behind the same plain door as a palace, you still get a tiled courtyard, a roof terrace over the Medina and breakfast served in the patio. What you give up is space and extras: rooms are smaller, pools are rare and the spa is usually a simple hammam, if there is one.

The difference between a good cheap riad and a bad one is large, so we looked hard at guest scores, and at how many reviews stand behind them. Every riad below scores well with hundreds or thousands of guests, most of them for under €100 a night.

Why a budget riad

Small price, real riad

For well under €120 a night you still get what makes Marrakech special: a courtyard behind a plain door, a rooftop over the Medina, breakfast made in the house.

A budget riad is not a hotel with fewer stars. It is usually a family house with five to ten rooms, run by the owner or a small team who know every guest by name. That is the real advantage: tips on where to eat, help with a taxi, mint tea when you come back from the souks.

What you give up is space and polish. Rooms are smaller, walls can be thin, and the cheapest rooms may have a compact bathroom or no window onto the street. Plunge pools are rare at this price, but rooftop terraces are common, and the courtyard is often the best seat in the house.

Location makes up for a lot. All our picks are inside the Medina walls, most within a 10–15 minute walk of Jemaa el-Fna, so you save on taxis and get back easily at night.

How to choose

Six checks before you book. At this price, small details decide whether the stay feels like a bargain.

  1. €40–120

    Check what the price covers

Most picks include breakfast, but not all. The city tourist tax is often added on arrival, so compare the final price.

  2. 15 min

Pick your distance from the square

Closer to Jemaa el-Fna means livelier lanes and later noise. The north of the Medina is calmer but a longer walk home at night.

  3. No car

    Plan the last few metres

Cars can’t reach most riad doors. Book the riad’s airport transfer for the first night: someone meets you and walks you in.

  4. En suite

    Ask about the bathroom

The cheapest rooms can be small or have a shower only. At hostel-style places, check that you’re booking a private room and not a dorm bed.

  5. Jul–Aug

Heat in summer, cold in winter

Old houses hold temperature. Air conditioning matters from June to September, and heating matters on December and January nights.

  6. Cash

    Carry some dirhams

Small riads usually take cards for the room, but tax, dinners or transfers may be cash only. Check the house rules first.

Budget riads: your questions

How much does a budget riad cost in Marrakech?

Our picks start at about €45–120 a night for a double room, and a hostel bed costs around €20. Prices rise in spring, autumn and over holidays, so book early for those dates.

Is breakfast included?

Usually, yes. Most small riads serve breakfast in the courtyard or on the roof. It is worth checking on the booking page, because a few of the cheapest rates are room only.

Can I find a cheap riad with a pool?

Yes, but the pool is usually a small plunge pool in the courtyard. Among our picks, Oiseau du Paradis, Dar Nour el Houda, Dar Nael and Equity Point have one.

Is it safe to stay in the Medina on a budget?

Yes. Location matters more than price. All our picks are inside the walls, on lanes used by locals and visitors. At night, stick to the main lanes, or ask the riad to walk you back the first time.

How do I get to my riad from the airport?

Cars can’t reach most riad doors. The simplest option is the riad’s own transfer: a driver brings you to the nearest drop-off, and someone from the house walks you to the door.

Budget riad or boutique riad: what’s the difference?

A budget riad gives you the house, the courtyard and the welcome, with simpler rooms. A boutique riad adds design, bigger rooms and often a better pool, for roughly double the price.
